    Schrödinger at Oxford: A hypothetical national cultural synthesis which failed.P. K. Hoch & E. J. Yoxen - 1987 - Annals of Science 44 (6):593-616.
This paper considers a possible national cultural and scientific synthesis which failed to take place: namely the integration of the Central European theoretical physicist Erwin Schrödinger into the primarily experimental orientations of the Oxford physics of the 1930s. We also consider the effect of the Oxford social and intellectual atmosphere generally, incluing the persistence of previous traditions which undervalued Science relative to the Arts, and University research relative to tutorial provision in the Colleges. The Oxford situation is then briefly contrasted (...)

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) has been employed to investigate the glass transition activation energy E g, thermal stability and glass-forming ability (GFA) of Se90In10− x Sb x (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) chalcogenide glasses. DSC runs were performed at six different heating rates. Well-defined endothermic and exothermic peaks were obtained at glass transition and crystallization temperature. The dependence of glass transition temperature T g on heating rate (α), as well as composition of Sb, has been studied. From (...)

    Epistemic logic, skepticism, and non-normal modal logic.P. K. Schotch & R. E. Jennings - 1981 - Philosophical Studies 40 (1):47 - 67.
An epistemic logic is built up on the basis of an analysis of two skeptical arguments. the method used is to first construct an inference relation appropriate to epistemic contexts and introduce "a knows that..." as an operator giving rise to sentences closed with respect to this new concept of inference. soundness and completeness proofs are provided using auxiliary three-valued valuations.

Desmosomes are junctions involved in intercellular adhesion of epithelial cells and hemidesmosomes are junctions involved in adhesion of epithelia to basement membranes. Both are characterised at the ultrastructural level by dense cytoplasmic plaques which are linked to the intermediate filament cytoskeleton of the cells. The plaques strongly resemble each other suggesting a relationship between the two kinds of junctions, as implied by their names. Recent characterisation of the molecular components of the junctions shows they are, in fact, quite unrelated implying (...)

    Exploitation.P. K. Grechko - 1993 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 32 (3):58-71.
Uneasy times such as the present are distinguished by the extreme indeterminacy and fuzziness of the language they use. But as a rule this is veiled over, not unsuccessfully, if often unconsciously and with self-deception. The concrete examples or "figures" of linguistic expression are quite diverse: they include the reduction of the conceptual structures of language to purely verbal constructions and schemata, the uncommonly frequent use of certain words and expressions, which creates the illusion that they are clear and well (...)

    The Underwater Reefs of Pluralism.P. K. Grechko - 1998 - Russian Studies in Philosophy 37 (1):28-46.
Pluralism is on everyone's lips these days. Only lazy people do not refer to it. Politicians and authorities on political affairs are particularly eager to talk about it. Not to be left behind are scholars who broaden pluralism to a philosophical methodological position that fits best the spirit of the times and the present historical situation. Some writers view pluralism as the most important discovery of the twentieth century, a further development of the Copernican revolution in philosophy.

It would be difficult to name a more interesting scientific problem than that of knowledge of the brain, its overall mechanisms and its molecular nature. Rational management of the brain in the future and utilization of the principles of its functioning to construct various mechanisms to undergird present-day technological progress should follow as direct consequences of development of that sphere of knowledge.

    Gelliana Graeca.P. K. Marshall - 1960 - Classical Quarterly 10 (3-4):179-.
The Vatican palimpsest omits the word enthymemate and leaves a lacuna, thus showing that the scribe found it written as Greek in his exemplar. Now A has been shown to belong to the fourth century, and therefore its authority must be greater than that of the other manuscripts available for this part of Gellius. The same problem occurs in 12.2.14, non pro enthymemate aliquo, where Hertz goes against the Greek of the manuscripts and adopts the reading of Carrio. Yet an (...)

    The Scientific Knowledge of Physical Nature. [REVIEW]P. K. H. - 1967 - Review of Metaphysics 20 (4):732-732.
The critical reader who possesses the patience requisite for wading through this linguistic morass can expect to be rewarded with a number of interesting insights and observations, primarily concerning phenomenological aspects of science and scientific method. Sikora's argument is informed by a Thomist philosophy of science-especially as exemplified in the writings of Jacques Maritain. His task is an analysis of the distinction and relation between physical science and its philosophy—an interesting and important problem. But unfortunately as in steamship cruises to (...)

Moving Forward the Discussion on Childhood Obesity.P. K. Newby - 2007 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 35 (1):7-9.
Childhood obesity is a serious problem for increasing numbers of children around the world. According to the International Obesity Task Force, 1 of 10 schoolaged children worldwide is overweight or obese, a number totaling 155 million; of these, 2-3% are obese. Prevalence is highest in the Americas and Europe, followed by the Near/Middle East, with smaller but growing numbers in the Asia-Pacific and Sub-Saharan regions of the world. In the United States, which provides the data for much of this report, prevalence (...)

    Boolean Algebra. [REVIEW]P. K. H. - 1968 - Review of Metaphysics 21 (4):751-751.
A small but comprehensive textbook on Boolean algebra, sentential logic, and lattice theory; this book will be of interest to students of logic and foundational studies in mathematics, particularly with respect to algebraic representations of propositional logic and elementary metamathematics of algebra. The book contains a self-dual set of postulates for Boolean algebras, with proofs of its completeness and independence. The book is written on an elementary to intermediate level, contains numerous exercises, a short index, and an even shorter bibliography.—H. (...)
